Mitsubishi

2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

Much like the Chevrolet Corvette, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution has practically sold itself. Yes, those two cars are nothing a like, but the EVO has been snatched up by young males like a pair of half-priced boots on Black Friday. While the Corvette has made it into the nervous and aging hands of middle-aged men experiencing a midlife crisis.

Go to an EVO gathering and you’ll see anything from a girly pink wrap to a completely modified track only monster. It’s kind of like the Miata; people usually don’t buy one to leave it bone stock. There are more modified Miata’s in the world than stock ones and the same can probably be said for the EVO.

After numerous generations, this 2015 EVO is said to be the last ever produced by Mitsubishi. Fans and owners pull out your hankies and those who really don’t know an EVO from a WRX, listen up.

It’s 2.0 liter MIVEC turbo charged engine pushes out 291 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque all mated to a 6-speed twin-clutch transmission with all four wheels driven by Super-All Wheel Control.

The EVO’s power output left more to be desired from behind its leather wrapped steering wheel. With 291 HP @6500 RPM and 300 lb-ft of Torque at @4000 RPM I jumped in expecting a fairly quick and sporty ride. What I got instead was some much-needed torque in the lower rev range and a disconnect between myself and the car. I wanted so much to feel the obsession EVO owners have for every generation, but it never quite hit me. It was underpowered for a car of its 3571 lb size.

The Super-All Wheel Control system did put my reservations aside when pushing the EVO around tight and twisty corners. The car felt planted and I felt confident in its ability to keep all four wheels continuously driving the EVO. An integral part of the car is the 6-speed twin-clutch Sportronic transmission, exclusive to the EVO MR. While almost every other Automaker is making the most out of flappy paddle gearboxes with 7-8 gears, Mitsubishi offers a six as the only transmission in the most top-end EVO. Why?

Sure, Sport mode is a lot more fun than Normal, especially when moved over to Manual Shifting. Allowing the car to shift for you in Sport emanates exhaust notes miles better than leaving it in Normal, with upshifts occurring above 4,000 RPM. I left the trans in Sport Manual Shifting mode for the most part to really hear the engine and exhaust the way I’d want it to sound as an EVO owner. As much as I played around with the Sportronic transmission, it never really exceeded my expectations.

Driving through my favorite canyon, the transmission felt more like an afterthought than an integral part of the car’s being. If the option of rowing your own gears is to be taken away completely for a top-end model, the transmission it’s swapped for should make every EVO owner want to trade in and trade up. For someone who lives and breathes sports cars, the Sportronic transmission didn’t sway or change my strong opinions, in fact it pushed me further towards my old-fashioned beliefs that manuals are still the best way to go for me.

The MR features an interior perfect for a single owner and even works for a small family of four. The front seats are manually adjusted and the rear provides enough room for two reasonably tall passengers to fit comfortably. The trunk isn’t huge but does offer enough space for some grocery bags or a spare tire or two for those weekend track days. This particular MR also features the Touring package, which includes: leather seating surfaces, power glass sunroof, heated front seats, sound dampening enhancement and scuff plates.

I’m one of those car nuts that can look past an interior if the car looks good on the outside and is fun as hell to drive. While the EVO does sport some sexy skin (more on that later), you’ve already heard my thoughts on performance, so that leaves the interior. And that’s about it. It’s an interior. It’s lacking some vital textural elements that can so easily bring an interior from “bla” to “sweet.” An option that was offered on EVO’s years past that would have provided a more race oriented feel are Recaro seats. I’d take a pair of cloth ones over heated leather seating surfaces.

Materials felt and visually seemed cheap with no real color variation causing one to feel like they were stuck in a black hole. The biggest plus was the Rockford Fosgate stereo system. One of the best I’ve heard in some time. Just make sure all settings are turned on, otherwise it sounds about as good as your average economy car. Using Bluetooth audio and hands free calling is pretty easy and safe thanks to some steering wheel controls and large screen buttons.

This EVO lacked a navigation system to play with. It seemed a little pointless to have a navigation type screen with no navigation system. There are quite a few optional packages that EVO buyers can choose to personalize their car, and it just doesn’t make sense to leave that off the standard equipment of a car geared towards a younger buyer.

Finished in a sleek Octane Blue paint, the car’s standard BBS wheels and Brembo brakes give the car a race ready look without busy stripes and stickers. Bilstein shocks, and Eibach springs, also come standard on the MR, further adding to the car’s impressive ride quality. If you like a heavy dose of track work on the weekends you’re already on your way with this car.

By far, the best part of the EVO MR is its completely aggressive and timeless exterior styling. From every angle, the EVO is purely alluring and totally awesome. If looks could kill the EVO would be one of very few cars remaining under $100,000. Even down to the non-functional hood scoop/fender vents and completely planted look, I relished in the numerous stares and attempts to race on several city streets.

Based on looks alone, I can see why the EVO has enjoyed such a huge cult following. With its standard race inspired parts and Japanese engineering it’s no wonder so many have turned these stunning blank slates into some completely modified machines. Due to its lack of common standard equipment, unadorned interior and lacking performance, I can also see why Mitsubishi is ending the EVO’s production run.

While Mitsubishi doesn’t plan to replace the EVO with a successor, it’s easy to say that the 2015 Lancer Evolution MR is the last clearly defined sports car to leave the Mitsubishi plant.

Nissan GT-R

New Features For 2016 Nissan GT-R

With a Twin Turbo V6 producing an earth-shaking 545 horsepower, it’s easy to overlook everything else GT-R® has to offer which is a lot. For 2016, that includes a new recalibrated suspension that reduces load fluctuation between the four wheels, and helps keep your wheels tight on the road for a smoother, more sophisticated ride. We’ve also added advanced headlights that adjust their illumination pattern based on your driving speed, and an all-new interior option with pale ivory semi-aniline seats, and contrasting hand-stitched details.

3.8 Liter Twin Turbocharger V6 Engine

Press the accelerator and you feel more than raw power. The 545-hp twin-turbo V6 has massive strength, but it’s highly refined, even earning a ULEV-II emissions rating. Rather than traditional cast-iron liners, each cylinder features a unique plasma coating with an independent intake system for each bank of cylinders. The powerful twin turbo takes advantage of a Premium Midship (PM) design for balance, where much of the engine sits back in the chassis. Uniquely brilliant, built to perform.

Handcrafted

From start to finish, each GT-R® engine is handcrafted by its own master engine-builder in a climate-controlled "clean room." Each twin-turbo V6 is precisely assembled from lightweight, highly durable aluminium and magnesium parts. It takes the exacting standards of the plant's most talented and devoted engine builders to produce the engine that has redefined what a supercar can be.

Every GT-R® engine is hand-assembled by a single technician one of only eight allowed the honor in a dust-free, temperature-controlled clean room. Once complete, the engine is tested. It goes through 44 minutes of bench testing and break in, where the engine is red lined for 10 solid minutes. When the entire GT-R® is built, it is put through its paces on the Tochigi Test track.

From the beginning, we knew GT-R® was going to redefine the breed in terms of performance, refinement and capabilities. So we brought together the AS Class drivers the top development drivers at Nissan to create a vehicle that would excel not just at one racetrack, in one kind of weather, or when driven by one master driver, this supercar would have to be for “anytime, anywhere,” and be as rewarding to a novice enthusiast as it would to a veteran racer.

GT-R® NISMO®

Lock up your sportscars, the GT-R® NISMO® is on the loose. During testing in 2007, the GT-R® posted an official 7-minute, 38.5-second lap the fastest lap ever for a production car around Germany’s legendary Nürburgring. On September 30, 2013 the GT-R® NISMO® posted a timed lap of 7:08.679 nearly 30 seconds faster an incredible feat of engineering and driver skill. Watch as the 2016 GT-R® NISMO® keeps breaking records and breaking hearts.

NISMO®-tuned Performance start with a handcrafted engine, add 0.26 coefficient of drag, 481 lb-ft of torque and 600-HP, and you end up with more than just a car, you end up with performance art.

NISMO® aerodynamic body design carbon-fiber front and rear fascia, side sills and rear spoiler. No line is wasted with NISMO® design, and the GT-R® is no exception. Carbon-fiber adds lightness while the spoiler increases downforce by 220 lbs making it a smooth and speedy ride.

Multi-LED Headlights With Adaptive Front Lighting System

Efficient, daylight-spectrum, multi-LED headlights create a distinctive “lightning” motif. But these four LED units do more than look the part. They adjust their illumination pattern based on vehicle speed, and cast a super-wide beam to enhance visibility, especially when cornering.

Hybrid Body Structure

To provide a rigid platform, Nissan engineers pioneered a unique hybrid body using high-strength steel, die-cast aluminum, carbon fiber and composite materials.

This handmade, dry carbon fiber spoiler is significantly lighter and stiffer than a spoiler made of traditional or “wet” carbon fiber. What does that mean for the GT-R®? First off, lighter is better every little bit of weight saved on the car means time saved on the track. Secondly, the added stiffness in the spoiler decreases flex and increases stability, which translates into more down force and better handling.

Precision Built

During assembly, "jigs" are used to hold body panels and components precisely in place. Vibration testing, laser measurements, and comprehensive inspections by experienced specialists are performed to ensure long-term functionality and to maintain the highest levels of accuracy and precision during assembly.

Hand-polished Finish

Unique to the optional Super Silver paint color is its extensive hand-polishing between each coat performed under three different light sources, to reveal any imperfections.

Under body Aerodynamics

The average car has exposed working gear under the car, where wind whips around, creating lift, and slowing you down. The GT-R®, of course, isn’t an average car. Its under body is virtually covered by composite panels, giving it a flat, aerodynamic surface.

At the front of the car, the flat under body is accelerating the air and channeling it over the brakes, cooling them down. At the back, a carbon fiber diffuser takes that accelerated air and slows it down, creating a vacuum effect that helps the GT-R® stick to the road, or the track.

Leather-appointed Seat

Leather-appointed front seats are undoubtedly built for performance. These bolstered sport seats help keep you in place, while cutouts in the driver’s seat cushion help facilitate leg movement. Rev up the interior with a choice between Red Amber or Ivory with the Premium Interior Package featuring hand stitched semi-aniline seats.

Please remain seated. Heavily bolstered and featuring integrated headrests, the Black Edition’s black/red leather-appointed Recaro® performance seats help keep you firmly in place even during the most intense cornering. Subtle red leather accents on the steering wheel, doors, and gearshift complement those distinctive seats, while the bold GT-R® logo in the center of the steering wheel adds a finishing touch.

The GT-R® interior sports a sleek trim of carbon-fiber and charcoal brushed-metal throughout, highlighting the ergonomic, modern design of the performance cockpit. Bold touches like leather on the steering wheel, shift knob and emergency brake handle and premium stitched leather inserts on the door panels and around the center console create an aggressive interior look. Sculpted performance bucket seats and an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat ensures that virtually all drivers will be comfortable behind the wheel of a GT-R®.

Drive Wheel, Suspension and Break

Handling duties are managed by a sophisticated 4-wheel independent suspension system mounted to high-precision 6-point front and rear sub frames. A special Bilstein® DampTronic® driver-adjustable shock absorber system utilizes multiple vehicle information systems to provide appropriate damping forces and a high level of control for a variety of driving situations.

Two clutches, no clutch pedal. The GT-R® 6-speed sequential dual-clutch transmission shifts as quickly as 0.15 seconds when in R-Mode. Inside are separate clutches for the odd and even gears. When in an odd-numbered gear, the adjacent even-numbered gear is "pre-selected," ready to make the shift immediately. Then, to achieve ideal front-to-rear weight distribution, the GT-R® clutches, transmission and transfer case are mounted in the rear of the chassis, creating the world’s first independent rear transaxle for an All-Wheel Drive vehicle.

To complement its incredible horsepower and torque, the GT-R® features awe-inspiring braking power. Nissan/Brembo® Braking System feature 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers for stronger, more equal clamping power something you’d expect to see on an all-out competition machine. For extreme rigidity with light weight, the caliper is machined from a single one-piece “mono block” of aluminum.

Instead of the traditional 50/50 torque split between front and rear axles, the electronically controlled All-Wheel Drive system provides nearly all of the available torque to the rear wheels, and can send up to 50% of torque to the front wheels. This provides the steering feel and response of a rear-wheel vehicle, while giving the added confidence that only AWD can offer.

Monitor

Engage reverse, and a camera mounted discreetly on the rear of the vehicle shows you what's directly behind you, on the dash-mounted screen in front of you. The system includes a wide 180º view, parking is a quick and easy affair.

Automatic On/Off Headlights respond to light conditions outside, turning on or off when necessary, and leaving you to concentrate on the road ahead. When it comes to tire pressure, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) takes away the guesswork. Using an icon on your dash, the system notifies you when tires aren't properly inflated.

Features
Nissan Intelligent Key®

The Nissan Intelligent Key® lets you tap a button on the door handle to lock and unlock your GT-R®, while your keys stay in your pocket or purse. With the standard Push Button Ignition feature, you just get in, push the button and go.

The Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System

The Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System activates via steering wheel-mounted controls. Now you can keep up connections no matter where the road takes you.

Bose® Audio System With Active Noise Control.

Engage The 11-speaker Bose audio system works with the performance of the GT-R. The aluminum speaker mounts in the doors give the body rigidity, which has nothing to do with music and everything to do with performance. In the back, two subwoofers between the seats were designed to use the trunk as a giant bass enclosure. New Active Noise Control technology uses a microphone in the ceiling to identify undesirable low-frequency engine sounds and neutralizes them with sound waves of the opposite phase. The result a quieter driving experience which still preserves the invigorating sounds of engine performance.

Nissan Hard Drive Navigation System

With Nissan GT-R®’s touch-screen navigation system with voice recognition and a high-resolution screen, the world is at your command.
